Bro Famau Group

Five Churches, One Mission

Bro Famau Group of Churches consist of five churches based in Flintshire and Denbighshire in North Wales. We are St Mary the Virgin in Cilcain, Holy Trinity in Gwernaffield, St Michael and All Angels in Nannerch, St John the Evangelist in Rhydymwyn, and St Berries in Llanferres. Together we seek to know Christ and make him known.  Our faith is rooted in the Holy Scriptures of the Old Testaments and the received traditions of the church, and is understood through the human reason granted us by God.  Whatever your age, gender, race or orientation there is a special place for you here with us.  We offer members a chance to become part of something greater, to grow their love for God and for one another in our beautiful communities.  Get in touch today or swing by any of our open churches for a visit; don't forget to sign our visitors book.

Important information for residents

SCAM WARNING

Warning over HMRC phone call scam that could cost you money!

Potential victims receive an automated message warning them they are under investigation from HMRC over an unpaid bill

The taxman says it has seen a spike in the number of cases being reported to it recently - and is urging the public not to be fooled.

The scam sees people called randomly with an automated message warning that they are under investigation by HMRC and need to call the number given or "face serious legal consequences."

If you call back the crooks will likely ask for your bank details and make off with you cash.

This week Welsh MP David Davies issued a warning on his website after one of his elderly constituents was targeted.

Mr Davies, who has reported the matter to Action Fraud and HMRC, said: "I was concerned to hear that residents in the constituency are being targeted like this.

Other potential victims have taken to social media to check with HMRC if the call was genuine or not.

One wrote: "Just received an automated phone call stating I'm under investigation by HMRC and house being monitored.

"Googled number and it's not HMRC, is this a fraud?"

Another said: "I'm getting an automated call saying they're from HMRC giving a final warning - sounds like a scam."

A spokeswoman for HMRC said it was aware of the scam, with the elderly and vulnerable people generally the target.

She said: "They often involve people receiving a call out of the blue and being told that HMRC is investigating them. If you can’t verify the identity of the caller, we recommend that you do not speak to them.

"HMRC will call people about outstanding tax bills, and sometimes use automated messages, however it would include your taxpayer reference number.

"If you are uncertain of the caller, hang up and call HMRC directly to check – you can confirm our call centre numbers online if you are unsure.

Victims have lost an average of £1,150 due to the scam - which sees crooks cold-calling and telling them they owe HMRC large amounts of money which they can pay-off through digital vouchers and gift cards.

How to avoid being scammed

HERE are some tips about HMRC on how to avoid being taken in by the fraudsters.

Recognise the signs - Genuine organisations like banks and HMRC will never contact you out of the blue to ask for your PIN, password or bank details.

Stay safe - Don’t give out private information, reply to text messages, download attachments or click on links in emails you weren’t expecting.

Take action - Forward suspicious emails claiming to be from HMRC to phishing@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk and texts to 60599, or contact Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 to report any suspicious calls or use their  online fraud reporting tool.

Check - If you think you have received an HMRC related phishing/bogus email or text message, you can check it against the examples shown in this the guide on the HMRC website

Contact HMRC directly - You can find the list of genuine numbers to call HMRC on their official website.

Meet Our New Vicar!

The church of St Mary the Virgin, Cilcain, was thronged with wellwishers on the afternoon of 4th June, the day of Pentecost, for the licensing of Revd Daniel Stroud to the Mold Mission Area and as the priest with responsibility for our Bro Famau group of churches. We have had vicars/ rectors from all sorts of backgrounds in our five churches but not, so far as I know, one from the Episcopal Church of the USA. It is an integral part of the service that the new priest is introduced to the bishop by a worshipper from the church they have come from. This function was done by Revd Lara Stroud, and was commented on by Bishop Gregory as a most fitting introduction of Fr Daniel. He looked forward to the second part of his duty, licensing Revd Lara to her role as Pioneer Priest in Estuary & Mountain Mission Area, when the same task would fall to Daniel. We also welcomed other members of the Stroud family, Charley, their 17 month old son and Mrs Rhonda Stroud, mother of Daniel, who will return to the US in a few weeks having seen them settle in. The licensing service is fairly long, but full of warmth and good wishes between the new priest and those he/she is to serve. Bishop Gregory spoke about how appropriate it was for it to be held on the feast of Pentecost, an exciting time and full of promise for new beginnings in the Church. He touched upon the terrible events of the terrorist attacks in Manchester and in London, that God was present in the suffering engendered and that we should not lose heart but trust in Jesus Christ. He welcomed the Stroud family as partners in the mission of the family of St Asaph. There is a solemn affirmation of service to the Church in Wales taken by the priest, and articles to sign, when the new incumbent is led to the stall and thereupon takes up his/her duties. Symbolically of course, Fr Daniel was installed in each of the five stalls in our churches and will during the next few weeks occupy all of them. 10 There was a welcome from local public officials and members of the mission area conference. At the end of the service he spoke of his pleasure at being here and thanked those who had made arrangements for the day. He mentioned that he originated in the Southern United States where hospitality is famous, but he had experienced a great welcome in Wales and in this part of the Church. Hospitality continued when the congregation moved to Gad Chapel schoolroom, where a bring and share buffet had been laid out, and fellowship was enjoyed. We welcome the Stroud family to our community with open arms and Fr Daniel with hearts full of hope for the future. We pray with them that we will have a long and happy friendship.

Cilcain Show

Bank Holiday Monday!

Although The Cilcain Show has gradually changed and grown throughout the years, the spirit of the old society remains. Traditionally competitions bring together the community in joint endeavour for enjoyment and interest, while new ideas for entertainment are regularly introduced to keep the show fresh.
Each year a committee of village folk supported by local residents work hard to make the show a success and always welcome additional volunteers with new ideas.
The show attracts about 4,000 visitors and raises funds for the church and local community.
